When it comes to EDI standards, you should know that whilst the Uniform Communication Standards (UCS) was being devised in the Unites States, other sets of standards were in the process of development in Europe. These were Organization for Data Exchange by Tele Transmission in Europe (ODETTE) for the automobile industry, Trade Data Interchange (TDI) for warehousing, and Data Interchange for shipping (DISH). But coming back to the United States, the independent efforts soon resulted in standards for participants in specific industries in the US. All types of business, it was observed, could benefit for the use of EDI. Some groups, in fact, were instrumental in promoting the idea of an industry-wide EDI standard. This resulted in the formation of the Accredited Standards Committee (ASC) X12.Today; the EDI standards are firm and not static because there are continuous efforts in the field of development of EDI. In fact, specific industry groups are continuing in the efforts to evolve new transactions sets that may be candidates for standardization.
